Photo Shoot |
Lynn Roberts would love to invite BCC members to our farm (Lucky Lane Farm) for a photo shoot on Saturday April 20 (rain date: Sun. April 21) 2024. I'm hoping by that point the grass will have grown enough to be more photogenic than the mud currently covering our pastures, and that by then enough of the mud covering the lambs will have flaked off so that you can tell the white from the black lambs.
There will be lambs (guessing over 40) and adult sheep. We also have a few fruit trees that may be in bloom, and some spring bulbs that should be flowering. Oh, and chickens... but no baby chicks yet. And if people are interested, I can do a quick sheep herding demo with one of the Border collies.
I suggest people arrive around 10 AM. (I will be busy with morning chores before then and won't be able to show you what's what, so please don't arrive early). Please carpool if possible as our parking is limited.
Please wear boots - there WILL be poop. And mud. You're welcome to visit between ~ 10 AM and noon, but it's best if everyone arrives during this time frame, as it is a working farm, and there's always a lot to keep us busy.
The main rules are
(1) leave every gate exactly as you found it.
(2) Don't allow sheep or lambs into any pasture they're not currently occupying.
(3) Don't touch the electrified wire at the top and bottom of most of the fences. It will deliver an unpleasant shock.
(4) Stay out of the pasture with the five adult rams. Although they have not shown aggression to us, rams should never be trusted.
(5) Please leave your dogs at home. Our sheep are used to our dogs but will panic if they see strange dogs.

Additional Motivation: the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is holding its annual print competition the first full weekend in May. Details are here: https://sheepandwool.org/festival/sheep-photo-competition/ There is NO fee to enter the competition itself, although there IS a fee to attend the festival in person if you're not a member of the Maryland Sheep Breeder's Association (which I assume most of you are not :) ). I'm happy to transport your prints to the competition that Friday (the day they're due) if you can get them to me in time. I am also happy to transport them back from the Festival on Sunday - please note that the photos entered in the competition MUST remain up until the Festival ends! (People pay to attend, and if they pay and want to view the winning photos but many are gone, they'll be disappointed).

Cole Thompson: “Vision, Passion, Projects”
Description: For many years I was a Photographic Grazer. I photographed wherever the grass was greener and resisted working on projects. And I created some wonderful “single hits” images, but the images were not related in any way.
But then something happened that changed how I viewed projects, and I've gone project crazy! Here are some of my projects:

I'm seriously hooked on portfolios!
And do you want to know the secret behind creating great portfolios?
(marketing people say that I'm supposed to use words like "secret" and "great" to lure you in...)
There isn't one. But what I have learned is that all my portfolios have two ingredients in common: Vision and Passion.
And so, I've been invited to speak on the topic of: Vision, Passion and Projects.
I'll be talking about how I create projects and why, and the critical role of Vision and Passion. I'll also be talking about:
· Where do my ideas come from?
· Why a good idea isn't enough.
· How I create projects.
· My least favorite type of portfolio.
· The project you should give up on.
· What are the rules for creating a project.
Bio: Cole Thompson is uniquely unqualified to speak on photography.

Jon Meyer: “Portfolios: What, Why and How”
Description: Jon will talk about what a portfolio is, its supporting materials, and the pleasure in saying something coherent about your photographic vision.
Bio: Jon has been juried into shows locally, nationally, and internationally, being shown in Barcelona, Berlin, and Boston, among other venues. He has been widely published in photography magazines, including Black & White Magazine, FotoNostrum Magazine, and LensWork. He appeared in LensWork’s “Light, Glorious Light” publication in fall 2023. In 2015, his color print received BCC's Graham Cromwell Award as that year’s best. In 2018 and 2022, he was featured in “Spotlights” in Black & White Magazine. In 2019, two of his images won first place awards in the International Color Awards and he was named their amateur photographer of the year. His portfolios, “In the Mind’s Eye,” “Inner Darkness,” and “Just Another Pretty Landscape,” have had solo shows at Through This Lens gallery in Durham, NC.

Jamie Konarski Davidson: “Wabi Sabi - Finding Beauty in Imperfection”
DESCRIPTION: Wabi Sabi in photography is more than capturing "old" and grungy subjects. It's about finding beauty in imperfection, incompleteness and impermanence. It's about being present in the moment and being attentive to things that might often go unnoticed or unappreciated. Jamie Konarski Davidson will discuss the art of bringing the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi to life in your images. In this session, she will share some of the background and basic concepts of wabi sabi and how this philosophy can be incorporated into your photography and, with intention, into your life. You may be surprised at the wide array of subjects and approaches that can be applied using this approach of being attentive to the everyday, ordinary aspects of your days.
BIO: Jamie Konarski Davidson is an award-winning, freelance nature photographer, workshop leader, presenter and Lensbaby Ambassador. Photography and flowers are her soul feeders, allowing her to capture and share beauty in nature and ordinary places. She connects with all things “old” and finds a special beauty in decay and fading cultural lifestyles that resonate with a life of hard work. Jamie's interpretive style reflects an intentional approach. Her work ranges from florals and still life, macro & close-up to landscapes (intimate & grand), abstracts in color, wabi sabi and infrared. Through her company, New Life Photos, Jamie leads location workshops throughout the East Coast in color and infrared and is available for personal instruction & speaking engagements. Her goals as an instructor are to encourage, inspire and help people grow in their photography skills, connect with their subjects, and see beyond the obvious so that they can discover their own visual voice.

Here are all of the details of our spring trip to The Lodge at Chalk Hill located on 37 acres of lush country in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania. The dates are June 7 to June 9, 2024. The Lodge at Chalk Hill is comprised of 60 garden style one level rooms overlooking Lake Lenore and is located approximately 3 1/2 hours from Baltimore. Attractions in the area include Kentuck Knob, Fallingwater, Ohiopyle State Park as well as several waterfalls. All of the units have a microwave and complimentary wireless internet. The entire property has been completely renovated in the past two years.
While there is no restaurants on the grounds of the hotel the Maywood Grill is within easy walking distance and they are open from 8:00am to 7:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays. There are other restaurants in the area including the Bittersweet Cafe open from 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Saturday.
Rates at the Lodge are extremely reasonable and range from 75.00 per night plus tax to 135.00 per night plus tax. This rate will be discounted based on how many rooms we sell as the Baltimore Camera Club. Please call the Lodge directly at 724-438-8880 and be sure to identify yourself as a BCC member. PLEASE DO NOT BOOK ANY ROOMS ONLINE AS THEY WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD OUR TOTAL AND THEREFORE OUR DISCOUNT. Leo Lubow: "What the Masters Can Teach Us"
Description: What makes a great photographer? What makes a great photograph? In this projector-driven presentation, Leo will show both his work and the work of such masters as Ralph Gibson, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus, Arnold Newman, Ansel Adams, and Alfred Eisenstaedt as he explores the importance of finding your visual signature, and as he reviews capture and post-processing techniques/tips to aid in that process. Focusing on tone, form, point of view, metaphor, and helpful guidelines of composition, Leo will identify the elements that comprise a fine-art image, all toward one end: to help you refine both your eye and craft as you shape your own special vision.
Bio: Leo Howard Lubow is a writer, educator, and award-winning photographer who specializes in portraits, headshots, commercial & promotional images, and street & fine art images. He teaches photography one-on-one and in association with educational organizations such as Johns Hopkins University (The Odyssey Program). His work (articles & images) has appeared in various publications and media, including Simon & Schuster, The Huffington Post, Good Morning America, Downbeat Magazine, Jazziz Magazine, The Luminous Landscape, The Baltimore Sun, NBC Sports, NPR.org, Baltimore Magazine, Style Magazine and American Dog Magazine. Lubow has also photographed pro-bono over 250 billboards/posters for the Show Your Soft Side Campaign, an anti-animal abuse effort that enjoys a world-wide audience.
In his personal work, Lubow’s interest lies in the individual or lone traveler, separated from the mainstream of life, whether it be a musician lost in the music, a sailboat racing a storm, a street artist with no audience, or a displaced person sleeping beneath a billboard of vampires. In short, he looks for emotional resonance in the isolated moment. Lubow lives in Owings Mills, Maryland with his wife, Annette, and their two dogs, one of whom is very bad.
